Winter’s Heat by Cristin Harber (Titan #1)

After putting her life on the line to protect classified intelligence, military psychologist Mia Kensington is on a cross-country road trip from hell with an intrusive save-the-day hero. Uninterested in his white knight act, she’d rather take her chances without the ruggedly handsome, cold-blooded operative who boasts an alpha complex and too many guns.

Colby Winters, an elite member of The Titan Group, has a single objective on his black ops mission: recover a document important to national security. It was supposed to be an easy in-and-out operation. But now, by any means necessary becomes a survival mantra when he faces off with a stunning woman he can’t leave behind.

When Titan’s safe houses are compromised, Colby stashes Mia at his home, exposing his secret—he’s the adoptive father of an orphaned baby girl. Too soon, danger arrives and Mia lands in the hands of a sadistic cartel king with a taste for torture. As hours bleed into fear-drenched days, Colby races across the globe and through a firestorm of bullets to save the woman he can’t live without.

I stumbled upon this little gem by accident, and I’m thankful I did.  Winter’s Heat is the story of Colby Winters, special ops guy and Mia Kensington, a military psychologist whom Colby stumbles upon while on a routine mission.  Mia is taking care of the final wishes of one of her by retrieving a list sought after by a Colombian drug lord.

Mia was a great heroine.  She was funny, sassy and smart.  She didn’t take any of Colby or his boys crap.  It was hilarious.  Colby is a hero to admire.  He is truly a white knight.  This book was fun, and I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

Cage by Harper Sloan (Corps Security #2)

Greg Cage was born to protect. While growing up, he was his mother and sister’s shield against the world… until he failed. For the last decade, he has carried that guilt and need for vengeance around… until it was stripped from him. Now, with his best friend getting married and no longer needing his protection, he is even more lost, completely adrift, and desperate for some control. All he has ever known was how to protect: his family, his friends, and his country. Can he go against everything he has ever known, and give up that control?

Melissa Larson will never let anyone hold the reins in her life. She has been the rock in her family for more years than she can remember, and the fight to keep them together is her main priority right now. She has always been fiercely independent and proud. The last thing she will ever do is ask for someone else’s help. But when that choice is out of her control, forcing her to rely on others to save her and her family, and pick up the pieces that are left, will she be able to let someone else be her strength?

The second Greg locks eyes with Meli, he knows that she is someone he needs. Someone he craves. Meli knew the second she met Greg that he would be nothing but trouble and heartache. Her life takes an unexpected turn, and that bitch Fate is back to wreak more havoc on another member of the Corps family.

All hell breaks loose, leaving Greg no choice but to call in a favor. He hooks back up with his old friend Braxxon Breaker from the Breakneck MC. Together, they make sure that nothing threatens anyone Greg loves again.

WHY did I let this series sit on my kindle for so long, unread?  I’m not sure because this is one of my favorite groups of alpha males ever!

We met Cage, Greg Cage, in book 1.  He is the best friend of Izzy and Dee.  I loved him in book 1, but I loved him even more in book 2.  This book starts with Greg taking Nate, Izzy and Axel’s son to the doctor.  There, he sees Melissa, and he is instantly smitten.  He is dealing with a crazy stalker, someone he has been sleeping with who wants more, but the minute he sees Melissa, he’s gone.

Melissa has walls put up around herself.  Her sister was murdered by her husband, and she and her mother are raising her sister’s son, Cohen (cutest kid ever!).  Melissa is their sole support.  A few days later, while Melissa is at Izzy’s bachelorette party, she again runs into Cage and ends up going home with him.  They discover that both of their sisters were murdered – in a way that is sad (and a spoiler, so I won’t spoil it.)

This book has some HOT, HOT, sex and some very tender moments.  Greg calls Melissa beauty, which I LOVE!!!!  I love the way the speak to each other – very loving and sweet.  Greg’s relationship with Nate and Cohen makes him swoon worthy in itself!  There are some sad moments, but this is a great, great series!!!

Happy reading.

Axel by Harper Sloan (Corps Security #1)

Fate hasn’t always been friends with Isabelle West. In fact, fate has been a downright bitch. Isabelle has learned the hard way how hard life can be when fate isn’t by your side. It can hand you dreams on silver platters, but it can snatch them right back and hand you nightmares. One thing Isabelle knew for sure fate was consistent with was taking away everything she ever loved.

For the last two years Isabelle has been slowly clearing the clouds of her past. Happiness is finally on the horizon. She has a thriving business, great friends, and her life back. All she has to do is jump over the last hurdle…her ex-husband. When problems start causing her to fear her new life, and memories that are better left forgotten start rushing to the surface the last thing she needs is a ghost from her past to come knocking on her door.

Axel never thought he would look into the eyes of Isabelle West again, and he wasn’t sure he wanted to now. He’s carried his anger for so long he isn’t sure he can just turn it off, but when he is faced with protecting her and an unexpected desire to have her again, life gets a little more complicated.

How will Axel and Isabelle deal when all their cards are put on the table and everything they thought was true blows up in their faces?

Axel is a TOTAL alpha male!  Holy cow.

This book has been on my to read shelf for a while now, and I noticed someone in one of my goodreads groups read it and liked it, so I thought I’d give it a whirl.  Am I glad I did!

The book starts off with Izzy, who is 17 and madly in love with her boyfriend, Axel.  Axel goes to the Marines and leaves Izzy behind.  Izzy is told, soon after losing her parents in a car crash, that Axel had died as well.  At that point, she was living with her grandparents in North Carolina and had no way of getting in touch with Axel.

In the years following, she meets Brandon, her husband, and things are great at first.  Then he changes, and abuse starts.  I will warn you there is quite a bit of abuse in this book (not rape, just physical abuse, not that that is any better).  Izzy is beaten so bad she ends up in the hospital and finally decides to leave her husband.

Two years later, she is living in another state, with her best friends, when she runs straight into Axel.  Izzy FREAKS out.  Axel, in the meantime, has spent the last 12 years thinking Izzy left him and is SUPER pissed off at her.  They have no idea what happened that ruined the past 12 years, and they have to learn to deal with each other, since Axel has been hired to provide security from Izzy, who is still dealing with her psycho husband.

Aside from the abuse that happens in this book, I loved it.  Izzy, for being a victim of abuse, was a really strong woman.  And Axel – holy shit, Axel.  What an alpha.  He makes some Kristen Ashley alphas look meek!  Super steamy sex scenes, likable characters and soft, tender moments make Axel a must read.

Happy reading.

Forged in Steele by Maya Banks (KGI #7)

Steele is determined not to allow Maren past his carefully guarded defenses, but when she’s in danger, there’s no way he’ll allow anyone else to protect her. She’s hiding something. He’s sure of it. But he isn’t prepared for the shocking discovery her secrets reveal. Or how they will forever alter the course of his destiny. He has a decision to make. Hold tight and shut her out. Or take a chance on something more powerful than he’s ever faced. Love.

Book 7 of the KGI series was MUCH better than the 6th. This book is about Steele, who is a KGI team leader, and Maren Scofield, a doctor in Costa Rica who has made an appearance in past KGI books.  Steele and his team are on a mission and there are some injuries, so they make a pit stop in Costa Rica to have Maren work on their team members.

One thing I liked about this book was the pace of the romance between Steele and Maren, and how blunt and straightforward Steele was about his feelings.  I felt the previous relationship and possible lingering feelings made this book feel genuine.  The last book felt rushed and forced, but this book moved at a nice pace that seemed believable.

There is a nice mystery/backstory with a druglord who is obsessed with Maren, and a KGI “cohort”, and that makes for some nice suspense.  As always, I love hearing about what is going on with the Kelly’s (there is a nice story with Rachel and Evan [book 1]).  The Kelly’s are great, and as long as there are books about them, I will continue to read.

Happy reading.
